FROM THE ANNOUNCEMENT: "Scandinavia House brings to life the rich cultures and traditions of the five Nordic countries?Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. A destination for New Yorkers and visitors to the City, Scandinavia House presents a wide variety of exhibitions and programs. This series of retrospectives offers a special opportunity to see the work of five of the most influential directors making films in the Nordic countries today. Danish director Jørgen Leth kicks off the series in September, and the films continue in September/October with Swedish director Jan Troell, in October with Norwegian director Anja Breien, in November with Finnish director Mika Kaurismäki, and in December with Icelandic director Friðrik Þór Friðriksson. Jørgen Leth, Anja Breien, and Friðrik Þór Friðriksson will be present to discuss their work. Friðrik Þor Friðriksson-Iceland's most internationally celebrated filmmaker-was synonymous for many years with the youthful filmmaking history of his country. A self- taught movie buff (witness the partly autobiographical Movie Days), he founded the country's first film magazine, ran a university film club, and helped found the Reykjavík Film Festival in 1978. He made 16 mm short films while still in school and began his professional career making unconventional documentaries and television dramas. Friðriksson often works as a producer of his own films as well as films made by other Icelandic directors and indie filmmakers in the U.S. His films have been awarded more than twenty international prizes."
