Synopsis

The journey to find one's inner strength can take a man to the strangest places. 

EYJÓLFUR is the parson of a tiny isolated rural community. The loss of his only son prompts him to take a look at his role in the apprehension and trial of two lovers who murder their spouses. Torn by guilt over his wrongdoing, having married his brother’s fiancé, Eyjólfur believes he has committed a crime no less serious than the two lovers – but his crime has gone unpunished. Is the death of his only son the beginning of the end for him?

The story is set in an isolated rural area in the north west of Iceland, now completely de-populated. It is a setting of great natural beauty and grand vistas, contrasting with the rather claustrophobic social structure and poverty described in the story. The story is driven by characters with strong emotions, each in their own way trying to preserve their dignity and humanity in the oppressive environment of this isolated and poor rural community and it’s harsh authoritarian rule.
