Synopsis

The tale of Thordur, an unwilling hero who despite himself can't go wrong.

The story of THORDUR KAKALI is based on a 13th century Icelandic Saga. The story explores how the main character manages to tear himself away from a life of drink and gambling in Norway to go to Iceland where several members of his family have been killed by a rivaling clan.

When news reaches THORDUR in Norway that his father and brothers, members of the most powerful family in Iceland, the STURLUNGA clan have been killed by a rivaling clan, he has few options. After living for years as drunkard and gambler at the court of the Norwegian King, Thordur has few friends. He’s heavily in debt and when he learns that hitmen are after him, Thordur decides that it is better to face his enemies in Iceland, than to live as a hunted man in Norway.

Upon his return to Iceland Thordur is sought out by a couple of hit men sent to kill him by the leader of the new ruling clan in Iceland, KOLBEINN THE YOUNG. Fearing that despite his reputation, Thordur will take revenge on the killers of his family as custom demands, Kolbeinn has ordered him to be killed.

Saved by his reckless bravery, Thordur tries to unite what is left of his family to fight Kolbeinn. The few still living members of the family are terrified of any association with Thordur and he is unsuccessful in his attempts to unite his family. Chased and hunted by Kolbein´s Thordur gathers around him a colorful band of outlaws, thieves and robbers, growing into an unlikely army championed by the oppressed former supporters of the Sturlunga clan. Kolbein the Young’s well organized army of conscribes is no match for the poorly equipped band of outlaws. It is more by sheer luck than cunning that Thordur’s band come unscathed from the first two battles between these unlikely enemies. Thordur is feckless, fearless and unpredictable. He’s not a natural warrior, but he’s fiercely loyal to his family honor and has nothing to loose. Kolbein the Young is a meticulous and wary character – unwilling to take unnecessary risks.

When the two armies meet in a final battle at sea – Kolbein the Young’s tactics are aimed at sparing the lives of his farmer conscribes and family members. Thordur’s colorful band has nothing to loose and through absolute fearlessness and considerable cunning the unlikely army wins the battle.Unimpressed by his new status as the most powerful man in Iceland Thordur returns to a life ofdrink, women and gambling.
